Merry Christmas ya filthy animals! It’s a time for goodwill and celebration. So it’s only fitting that Tech Santa arrived at the studio with a very important job for our favourite PC builder. Let's celebrate and share goodwill by building and giving away a custom built PC - in collaboration with ASUS and AMD, with some additional help from Kingston.
This project began earlier this month when we sent off a special wish list to the big guy in red. We want to share the festive spirit, and to do that we just had to ask for some top end AMD and ASUS hardware! We didn’t know if our request would arrive too late, or if Matt was even on the nice list, or if it was too much to ask of Tech Santa to get an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X 3D, but it all worked out in the end. So let’s spend Christmas building a PC, to be won by one special community member. Details of how to enter will be listed below.
Unwrapping time
On the build desk there was a neatly wrapped pile of presents, a half drunk coffee and some nibbled Jaffa Cakes. (I’m curious, if you’re not in the UK do Jaffa Cakes even exist? Let me know in the comments). Tech Santa had been! But what had he left us?
Parts List
We got everything we could ask for, including the illusive Ryzen 7 9800X 3D! This build is going to be epic, and I must say I’m a little jealous that I can’t win this!
Case Overview
We’ve built the TUF Gaming GT302 many times, but we’ve not yet written about it, so this is long overdue. As far as it goes it’s a fairly standard mid tower case. It has space for motherboards up to EATX, a 140 or 280mm radiator on the front, and up to a 360mm radiator up top. It can house massive graphics cards up to 407mm. Included with the ARGB version are 4 x 140mm ARGB fans, 3 on the front set as intake and one on the rear as exhaust. It’s nice to see cases with masses of airflow built in! In the back of the case there is plenty of space for cable management, with a vertical channel and plenty of other mounting points should you need them - which made cable management a breeze!
What sets this case apart from others in the space is the blocky front panel. It has a wide front grille, with the mesh forming squares, at the sides of which are 2 vertical columns which stick out from the front a little. It gives it a minimalist but aesthetically pleasing look!
How Was The Build?
For a build with an AIO cooler, this couldn’t have been much simpler. The case strips down in the expected way, all of the panels pop off easily. The most complex part of the motherboard assembly was digging out the screwdriver to remove the M.2 cover so we could mount it! Everything fit as if it was meant to be there. Though that is to be expected when staying in a manufacturers ecosystem. I guess the only thing that we had to figure out was how to make the 3 x PCiE cables required by the TUF Gaming RX7900 XT look reasonably tidy. We considered cable extensions - they didn’t look quite right, I even platted the cables to see how that looked, it was good but not perfect. We settled on the simple answer, using some velcro to keep everything tidy.
Airflow
The GT302 is made for airflow, with 3 x 140mm fans at the front we had no doubt that intake would be immense and with an additional 140 on the rear and a 360mm radiator exhaust would be simply dealt with. We were right about this one, we feel the visualisation was one of the best to date! We have no doubt the system will stay cool for its winner no matter what is thrown at it!
Performance
Typically we’ll do some bench testing on the PCs we build. We’ve made sure all drivers are up to date, everything is recognised by Armoury Crate and is working as it should. As this goes out to a winner it feels only right that they should be the ones to truly put it through its paces. We’re sorry if you’ve come here for bench marking, normal service will be resumed soon we promise.
Roundup
This was our pleasure to put together, and we feel honoured to be capping off one lucky persons festive season with gaming joy. The parts list was entirely picked by Matt to represent the best of what AMD can do, and I must admit I’m a little saddened that this beautiful build will be leaving the studio soon. If you feel like copying this build then by all means go for it, this was super simple and even a PC DIY novice will have a good time with this one!
